AND CLASSES
As early as I can remember I have been interested in nature
and art. I have always been fascinated with art history and learned
about European art through family books and antique treasures.
Jewelry tells a story and history of the people who wear the
creations.
My interest in creating metalwork developed in the 1960’s while in high
school. I designed and fabricated my first pieces of jewelry as a student at
Middletown High school, Middletown, Md. As a student at St. Mary’s College,
St. Mary’s City, Md., I was an art education major with a focus on design,
three-dimensional artwork and metalwork.
After graduation in 1974 I taught art in both private and public school systems
before moving exclusively to jewelry work in 1978. Working for other jewelers
I learned a few bench tricks and enough about the retail business to look for
a gallery to handle my work.
From 1988-1998, I was the resident jeweler and part-owner of an art gallery in
Frederick, MD. During these years my daughter and son were born and I continued
my jewelry business. I began to create a style to my work, specializing in custom
design and fabrication.
In both design and execution I try to be original, intricate and expressive.
Nature continues to be a part of the theme in my jewelry as well as the use of
symbols to express feelings. Building upon the nature motif my designs are flowing
and showing soft lines and movement.
I work primarily in gold (14k-18k), sterling and fine silver, integrating precious
gemstones, pearls, and handmade lamp worked glass to add color to my work. My
work is hand fabricated from sheet and wire metal stock and/or cast from hand
carved waxes.
I am currently teaching jewelry classes at DVAC (Delaplaine Visual Arts Center)
in Frederick, MD and HCC (Hagerstown Community College) in Hagerstown, MD. I
continue to create custom work and my own line of jewelry as well as taking part
in several shows a year.
My work can be viewed in the gift gallery @ DVAC, @ 12 West Main St. Gallery
on 12 W. Main, in New Market, Md.,
WCAC gallery (Washington County Arts Council) in Hagerstown, Md., and Sliver
Ribbon
